The season after Epiphany is often when we retell the stories of God calling people into faithful discipleship. Last week we examined the call of Jeremiah to be a prophet who would announce for forty years the coming doom of Jerusalem at the hands of the Babylonians. This week we will read about the call of the prophet Isaiah. He had a similar job, but about 120 years before Jeremiah, and we will read about the call of Jesus’ first disciples, Simon, James, and John. Isaiah received a vision of the awesome holiness and power of God in the temple, while Simon and the others were seized with amazement when Jesus led them to a miraculous catch of fish. All of these stories convey a radical shift in the lives of those who were called into God’s service. What can we learn from their experiences, and what might the Spirit of Christ have in store for us?
