It’s a snow day, so we are leading worship from Zoom today.
God has blessed us in so many ways! As we start this new year we are trying to imagine what God has in store for us, what God might be dreaming for us. What dreams do we have that might reflect God’s own longing? So far we’ve imagined (based on Scripture) that God dreams of us following Christ as disciples, growing deeper in faith, hope, love, and witness to Christ, and also of a church (including our congregation) that is growing both spiritually and numerically, reaching new people with the Good News.
This week we imagine (based on Scripture) what God might be dreaming about human relationships and their economic and political expressions, and that means doing justice. God consistently shows deep concern throughout the Bible for the poor, powerless, outcast, and oppressed, commanding the people of God to care for them and share with them in every way. Ancient Israel struggled and mostly resisted this command, and to be fair, humans of every historical era and nation have done a pretty lousy job of creating just societies. Sadly we are no exception, even in a nation where Christianity has been the dominant religion. So as we come to this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday and the inauguration of a new presidential administration on the same day, let’s dream a bit with God about how humans should live together.
