Bible Text: John 1:43-51, 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 |

In Paul's first letter to the Corinthians, he addresses several situations in that congregation where folks were taking their freedom in Christ as license to do whatever they wanted. This seems to have included participating in the corrupt systems and culture of Rome, which Paul found to be appalling. He corrected them by reminding them that their unity with Christ put limits on their choices, unless they intended to dishonor Christ. We are no less tempted by our egos to engage in false freedom. The scripture and the Holy Spirit call us to reflect honestly on how we fall into that trap, giving in to anger, fear, or shame. It is only through the mystical union with Christ that Paul described that we can find true freedom.
