We are keeping calm and carrying on, coming close to the end of liturgical year B, the year of Mark’s gospel. We continue the story from Mark 12 where Jesus is in Jerusalem the week before his betrayal, arrest, and execution. He has been arguing with the religious leaders of different parties and sects and showing them all up. This week we hear his warning about the hypocrisy of the scribes in particular and how they enjoy gathering wealth and prestige. He contrasts this by pointing out the sacrificial offering of a poor widow. What might Jesus say to us today? Can we find parallels in our own time and context? I’m thinking yeah.
