Bible Text: Acts 19:1-7, Mark 1:4-11 |

When Jesus was baptized by John in the Jordan River, the heavens opened, the Holy Spirit descended, and a voice announced, "This is my Son, the Beloved, in whom I am well pleased." In being baptized with sinners, Jesus identified with them, and by extension, will humans in general. When we are baptized, we can identify with Jesus, the one beloved by God. When we identify with Jesus, we can have compassion on other people just as he did and does. The tricky part is how to use this insight to make sense of things like the attack on the U.S. Capitol. May God have mercy on us all.
