Series:

In our continuing series on the Protestant Reformation, 500 years in, we look at the question of Christian freedom, a critical question then and now. Essentially, what is our relationship to the Law of God? The argument was between the Protestant theology of salvation by grace alone vs. the prevailing theology of salvation by works.

The Reformers developed an understanding of our relationship to God's Law that can be summarized in three points:

  • We are free from performing the works of the Law to secure our salvation.
  • We are then free to fulfill the works of the Law as a product of a thankful heart and sanctified life.
  • We are free to be indifferent about indifferent things, that is, we can follow our consciences individually on matters that are not expressly resolved in Scripture.

The sermon explores these points in more detail.
