We are wrapping up Jesus’ Sermon on the Plain, Luke’s parallel passage to Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount. So far we have heard Jesus declaring blessings on the destitute, woes on those who live in abundance, and a command to love one’s enemies. These are challenging words for our culture, for middle class America. In the third movement of Jesus’ sermon, though, he takes a little lighter tone, perhaps to open a door for those who are getting turned off by the other bits. (Of course, not everyone would be upset by what he had said so far! The destitute folks probably could listen to him all day!) Nevertheless, even with a softer touch, his point in this section is just as pointed – listen and obey, or face the consequences.
We will celebrate the Lord’s Supper in worship today. Those who want to participate virtually will need some bread and some wine or juice of the vine available when we get to that part of the service. Then just follow along with us.
