The season of Advent begins today! This is the season of preparation for the feast of the Nativity of Jesus Christ. It is marked by calls for watchfulness, persistent faith, repentance, and mercy. These are in many ways different from the cultural preparations for the secular feast of Christmas. Advent helps us prepare spiritually for Christ to come into the world, not only in history, but also in our lives right now and at the end of all things.
In the liturgical year of Luke’s gospel, which we begin this week, Advent is filled with prophetic voices that warn listeners of coming judgment and the need to change course to bring God’s justice to the poor and suffering. Again, very different from the messages of commercials we’ll be seeing for the next month. Today’s gospel reading picks up where we left off at the end of Mark’s year a couple weeks ago. Jesus tells the disciples about the coming end of the age. What are the signs, and what do they mean, and what must we do to be ready? That’s all the work of Advent.
We will celebrate the Lord’s Supper in worship today. If you want to participate with us virtually, you’ll need a bit of bread and some wine or juice of the vine on hand during the service. Then just follow along!
