In the Sermon on the Plain (Luke’s parallel to Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount), Jesus begins by announcing blessings on some folks who probably don’t really feel blessed. Then he goes on to proclaim woe to folks in the opposite situations. This doesn’t appear in Matthew’s version where it’s just blessings. We tend not to focus on Jesus’ words of judgment, especially when they hit close to home. But what if he’s serious? What if folks who are satisfied with their situation in life are in for a fall? Maybe more to the point, what if the down and out are truly the ones who will be blessed? Does that change how we think about our own station in life? Should it? How can we prepare for God’s upside-down priority structure?
