We have an odd combination of scriptures this week. The first is the call narrative of the prophet Jeremiah. He was young and inexperienced, but God had a plan and made it happen. Jeremiah ended up serving as a prophet for over forty years, warning the people that their unjust behavior would result in the invasion and destruction of Jerusalem. This is coupled with one of the most famous passages from the New Testament, 1 Corinthians 13, the so-called Love Chapter. While a favorite at weddings, this passage was part of a larger discussion the Apostle Paul crafted about how people in the church should treat each other at all times and in all situations. That is, love, love, love. This was prompted by the unkind, competitive, and selfish behavior of his audience. It seems like we humans have a tendency toward unjust, selfish behavior, and it seems God has a couple ways to try to correct us.
