As we continue our tour of the Bible, we move into mountainous territory this week with the Gospel According to Matthew. The mountain is a recurring motif in this gospel, calling to mind the many important stories that took place on mountains in the Hebrew scriptures with folks like Abraham, Moses, and Elijah to name a few. Perhaps the Temple Mount is most central for reasons we will explore. Alexander John Shaia suggests that this is the first gospel in the New Testament because it is an invitation to rely on Christ in times of change. Hmmm. That could preach today!
