Bible Text: 1 Corinthians 1:10-18, Matthew 4:12-23 | Rev. David A. Douthett
Matthew's gospel includes many references to the Hebrew scriptures to show how God fulfilled them in and through Jesus. This week's lesson opens with a text we heard during Advent, showing us Jesus as the great light shining for those living in deep gloom. Then Jesus calls his first disciples. Meanwhile, in our epistle lesson, the Apostle Paul calls out the members of the Corinthian church for dividing into factions instead of focusing on Jesus alone. As we consider our own discipleship in a gloomy, divided world, what is the Spirit saying to us?
